The Location Independent Tax & Finance Guide (US)

The Location Independent Tax and Finance Guide (US edition)If I don’t live in the US full-time and my business isn’t based there, is there a way that I can set up my finances to minimize my taxes?

That is probably one of the most common questions we’re asked by members of the community. The problem is that this kind of advice is expensive – often as much as $150-200 per hour.

Not to mention that the whole process of learning how to handle your own financial affairs can be lengthy and time-consuming. It can be difficult to know where to begin.

That’s why we asked Marion to write this guide for us…to provide a cost-effective, easy-to-access starting point so you know what your options are and whether it’s worth pursuing further.

What This Guide Will Help You Answer:

Some of the most frequently asked questions this guide will help you answer, include:

  • Do I need to incorporate? If so, where should I do it?
  • If I don’t have a home base in the US, am I still liable for tax? What if I’m no longer resident?
  • What’s the difference between residency, domicile and citizenship? Does it matter?
  • Although I’m liable for tax worldwide, is there any way I can minimize this if I’m nomadic?

Here is what you’ll find out in the Tax & Finance Guide:

What This Guide Won’t Do

Many people expect to be able to get all the answers they’re looking for in an ebook. Unfortunately, no guide of this nature will be able to give you the low down on every single global tax permutation available.

Tax issues are very complex and are changing almost on a weekly basis. Add your own personal circumstances to the mix and you’d end up with a book thousands of pages long as well as it being ridiculously expensive.
Each individual situation needs to be dealt with separately by a professional with international experience before a tailored solution can be recommended and implemented by yourself or on your behalf.

Common Questions Answered

Will this guide tell me what to do?

This guide won’t tell you what to do. No guide of this nature could, since we don’t know your specific personal circumstances and therefore what might be the best solution for you. The guide will point you in the right direction and show you how and where to get started. It will enable you to decide whether you’ll be able to figure it out yourself or whether you’ll need professional help to organize your own personal finances for the short, medium and long term.

Isn’t much of the information available for free?

You can find a lot of the information provided in the guide for free - both online and offline. That’s often the case when it comes to ebooks & digital guides. In fact we provide a lot of free information on the blogs in this network which will always be free for you to read.

However the one of the key benefits of all the guides we produce, is that they save you the hours and hours of research usually required to:

  • Find the information you’re looking for including the stuff you don’t know you should be looking for
  • Figure out whether the information you’ve found is accurate, up to date and relevant.

If you have several hours to crawl through the relevant websites on this topic, then you will no doubt find much of the information you need. But if you don’t have that time to waste then you’ll find all the relevant, up-to-date and accurate information here, summarized in one easy-to-read guide.

Marion’s not from the US. Does she really know enough about US taxes to write this guide?

As Marion states in the guide, one of the worst things you can do is to consult a local tax professional about international tax matters (we did that and ended up making a costly mistake). They probably won’t have the necessary knowledge to advise you of all the important factors you need to consider when dealing with international tax affairs.

Marion may not be from the US but you can be 110% confident (as we are) that she very likely has the most up-to-date knowledge of US tax affairs as they relate to international taxes you’ll find at a price like this. She has dealt with international financial planning & taxes for years - and in preparation for this guide spent hours and hours updating her knowledge by crawling through the government websites, so you don’t have to.

Will you be releasing other versions of this guide?

Yes, at some point. We have plans to release UK, European & Australian versions of the Tax & Finance Guide - although there are no set dates for these. As you can imagine, it takes quite a while to get up to speed with the very latest situation for a country and, as this can change frequently, we want to be able to commit to updating the guides we have, when needed.

About The Author

Marion Harrington has lived a very varied and colourful 47 years and was originally educated as a classical clarinettist. In 2000 she retrained as a financial planner & launched her own company.
She quickly developed a specialty in international tax matters and went on to establish a reputation as “the maverick tax guru” with lawyers, major financial concerns and clients as a result of authoring a very serious academic tax research paper and the fact she chose to do business with high net worth clients in shorts and a t-shirt.

These days, Marion is immersed full-time on her own quest to become location independent. When she’s not consulting with individual location independent clients, she’s just released her first album, having finally reignited her love affair with the clarinet.
